INRIA

STEEP is an interdisciplinary Lab. that tries to model regional transition to sustainability and develops mathematical and computational tools for decision-making. This group gathers physicists modelers, geographers/planners, and mathematicians and computer scientists.

STEEP cooperates with several groups and Labs, in particular with the SOCLE3 group.

STEEP is a Labs of INRIA Grenoble Rhône-Alpes.

Designing a transport / land-use / energy / environment model at a local scale

Framework: Designing policy decision-help tools in the framework of the transition to sustainability.

Project:

The goal of this project is to develop a transport / land-use / energy / environment model at a local scale. We aim at combining two existing models (or at least getting inspiration from them): TRANUS which describes a "transport / land-use" system, and ETEM which models the interactions between the energy and the environment (in particular greenhouse gases (eg. CO2) and ozone precursors (NO2 and volatile organic compounds)).

Keywords:

Sustainable development, integrated modelling, transport, land-use, energy, environment, global warming, models combining, MARKAL models, system dynamics, optimization, simulation.

People and cooperations:

  • The project will be carried out in the STEEP lab at INRIA Rhône-Alpes, under the supervision of Dr. Emmanuel Prados and Pierre-Yves Longaretti. The aim of STEEP is to design policy decision-help tools to identify and assess relevant factors in the transition to sustainability at local scale.
  • Cooperation: This project will be done in tight collaboration with the SOCLE3 group.

Salary: During the stay, interns receive an allowance. For local student the disposable income is 398.13 € (revenu net). For international students, the income is much more important, see the official international INRIA internships web page.

Profile and conditions for applicants:

  • Level of qualifications: Engineer / Master students / PhD candidate.
  • Skills: The spectrum of skills we are looking for is large and multidisciplinary (energy, economy, environmental science, geography, applied mathematics, computing, etc). Skills in programming and applied mathematics are strongly appreciated.
  • For international students, see the official INRIA conditions. Unsolicited applications can also be accepted.

Application:

  • For students of partner institutions (see official international INRIA internships web page to know what a partner institution is), please follow the official application process described at international INRIA internships web page.
  • For students of other institutions send a letter or a pdf file containing a complete CV, your publication list, and a list of two references (with telephone numbers and postal and e-mail addresses) to Emmanuel Prados.
  • Deadline: June, 2010.

Start date: As soon as possible!

Duration: The duration of internships is 6-12 months within the context of a Masters or PhD course.

Prospect: The internship might lead into a PhD thesis project.
