3D Shape Segmentation and Matching

Post-doctoral fellow

The PERCEPTION (http://perception.inrialpes.fr) group at INRIA Grenoble Rhone-Alpes has an opening for a two year postdoctoral position in the field of 3D shape segmentation, matching, tracking, and recognition.

For the last couple of years we developed a new method for matching graphs. The method combines spectral graph theory and a probabilistic framework for performing inexact matching. The combination of these two (deterministic and probabilistic) methods yields very good results, in particular in the presence of large and sparse graphs. We already applied this method to register articulated shapes represented either by their volumes (voxels) or by their surfaces (meshes). SpecMatch is an open-source software package that implements our spectral graph matching algorithm.

Relevant publications: Cuzzolin et al. CVPR’08, Mateus et al. CVPR’08, Knossow et al. GbR’09.

These methods have a great potential in vision as a framework for segmentation and matching and there are many vision problems that can be tackled within this framework. Our own work has exploited the algebraic properties associated with the eigenvectors of the Laplacian matrix of a graph. There is a lot more to do both in terms of developing the theory and applying it to various kinds of visual data, or any other kind of relational data. In particular we plan to develop a human action recognition method based on a combination of 3D shape reconstruction (meshed surfaces), spectral methods (Laplacian embedding of graphs), and mixture models for learning and classification.

The postdoc being offered is a purely scientific position. The only requirement is to produce scientific results and to publish them. The person taking the position will have total freedom to take new directions of work, apply the spectral graph theory to various problems, etc.

The net salary that we can offer is 2,300 euros per month for 24 months. On top of this salary we offer excellent work conditions with a considerable travel budget (participation to major conferences in the field, 2,000 euros per conference, laboratory visits, etc.) and all the necessary equipment to carry the work (multi-camera vision laboratory, etc.). INRIA provides a very advantageous health insurance that is being paid directly by INRIA. Intense French classes are offered free of charge.

The PERCEPTION is a truly international group composed of 5 faculty members, 10 PhDs and 5 postdocs from many countries. All the group meetings, seminars, discussions, etc. are in English.

The position is available immediately. Please send a letter of interest, CV, a list of publications and the names of three references to: Radu.Horaud@inrialpes.fr

Eligibility: The candidate should have a PHD degree in computer science and a strong scientific background in computer vision, machine learning, and statistics, as well as excellent programming skills.
